It was a favourite location of Aztec emperors before Hernan Cortes built his palace there and the Hapsburg, Maximiliam I of Mexico, built gardens and hide-aways in the then town. In recent years, Queen Maria Jose di Savoia of Italy, film icon Maria Felix, Barbara Hutton of the Woolworth fortune, The Shah of Iran, Cantinflas; and even Papa Doc of Haiti have chosen to hold homes in Cuernavaca. Now a city, Cuernavaca reflects diverse economic demographics, including having as residents Mexicans of established means who seek a year round spring climate and abundant vegetation. Named by early scientist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt, as the “city of eternal spring”, Cuernavaca is located in the State of Morelos, a short 54 mile drive south-west from Mexico City.
